Why do people want to join existing communities instead of creating their own? What are the benefits of joining an existing community?
From what I’ve seen, the most probable reasons are:
- People want to be users, not community managers. Those roles are very different in nature and not every person who likes being part of a community wants to be the host of it.
- On top of that, launching and running a community requires more effort and time than just participating in it, not everyone might have it.
- What is even more important is the mission of a community. Usually, people join communities to help to achieve something together. For example, become better in a role playing game or create a free encyclopedia. So if a person finds others who are working on the thing that bothers them, they are likely to join the group rather than creating a new (similar) one.
