Community Management Metric Guide: Monthly Active Users

Monthly Active Users

The number of monthly active users represents the number of unique users who make at least one significant contribution to the community over a month.

Question answered by the metric

How many users have been active in the community during a given month?

Steps to measure

  1. Count the unique users who have interacted with the platform in a meaningful way during the month.
  2. Be careful not to double count users who interact multiple times during the same month.

Interpretation

The main goal of this metric is to show the size of the active community. The more active users the community has, the better. At the same time, the number of active users does not always correlate with the number of actions performed in the community due to the disproportion of the contribution of users with different levels of engagement.

In case of a decrease in the number of active users, the first thing to look at is which of the engagement cohorts is losing users the most.
