Community Management Metric Guide: Monthly Contribution Frequency

Monthly Contribution Frequency

Monthly contribution frequency refers to the number of actions a user performs in the community in a given month. It is used to assess the level of engagement of a user.

Question answered by the metric

What is the number of actions a user performs on days when they are active?

Steps to measure

  1. Get the number of meaningful actions a user performed during a given month.
  2. Get the number of unique days the user was active during the given month.
  3. Calculate the frequency by dividing the number of actions by the number of active days.
  4. Calculate the frequency for all users who have been active during the given month.
  5. Calculate the average frequency for the given month.

Interpretation

The higher the value of this metric, the more actions on average users take in a given day. If the value is close to one, this indicates possible problems with engagement and the transactional nature of participation, when a user publishes a post and does not appear in the community again during the day. This, in turn, may also be a consequence of slow communication dynamics.
