Community Management Metric Guide: Percentage Of Second Time Askers Out Of First Time Askers

Percentage of second time askers out of first time askers

This metric shows the relationship between second time askers and first time askers in the form of percentage.

Question answered by the metric

What is the percentage of users asked their second question relative to those who asked their first question?

Steps to measure

To calculate the percentage of users who asked their second question relative to users who asked their first question, one needs to do the following.

  1. For a given period, calculate the number of users who asked their first question.
  2. For the same period, find the number of users who asked their second question.
  3. Divide the number of users who asked their second question by the number of users who asked their first question.
  4. Multiply the result by 100 to get a percentage.

Interpretation

The higher the percentage of transition from posting first to posting second question, the better. A high metric value means that users see value in your community (and vice versa, if the percentage is low, most likely, users are not getting what they come to your community for). In case of a low value, first of all, you should make sure that as many new topics as possible receive at least one reply from the community.

Note that as the serial number of the question increases, the variability in the data increases, since there are fewer such questions (i.e. less data). If you have a small community and the number of users who ask many questions is small, it is worth limiting yourself to analyzing only the first 3-5 questions.
