Community Management Metric Guide: Split Into Growth And Decline Segments

Split Into Growth And Decline Segments

Based on the number of monthly active users, with a special algorithm we split the community performance history into segments of growth and decline.

Question answered by the metric

What are the periods of growth and decline?

Steps to measure

  1. Using the algorithm of choice, identify change points in the curve of monthly active users. These points split the curve into segments
  2. For each segment, identify if the segment represents growth or decline. The easiest way to do that is to compare the averages of two following segments. If the second segment has a higher average than the first one then the community grows over the second segment.
  3. Then we can find the percentage of months when the community was growing by dividing the number of growth segments by the total number of segments.

The most value of this metric we get from mapping other metrics on the periods of growth and decline based on segmentation.

Interpretation

The type of a segment indicates the stage the community is at at a particular point in time.
