Community Management Metric Guide: Thirty Day Retention

Thirty Day Retention

Thirty-day retention refers to the percentage of users who continue to engage with or remain active in the community 30 days after joining.

Question answered by the metric

How many users remained active on the site for 30 days after their first activity?

Steps to measure

  1. Count the unique users who have performed some action on the first day of the observation period
  2. Count the unique users who have performed some action on the platform after one day out of the users you have counted on the first day. This will be users who are retained after 1 day.
  3. Divide the number of 1-day retained users by the number of users on the initial day of the observation.
  4. Do the same for other 29 days.

Interpretation

The more users who continue to participate in the community after 30 days from their first activity, the better. Our goal is to increase this metric. It is better to interpret this metric relative to earlier values of the metric in the same community or relative to the industry average for a given period.
